2023 / Absurdity in Literature. Precursors and Continuators

Tekstualia issue No. 2 (73) 2023

In the 2020 issue of Tekstualia, No. 2 (73), we attempt to recall, and then, as a result of in-depth analyses, expand or reformulate the existing definitions of the absurd. In research on this category, we will take into account at least a few distinct areas. First of all, we will recall the Polish tradition of the absurd, i.e. the files of the Babin Republic (a social and literary group of nobility, operating from the second half of the 16th century on the Pszonek family estate in Babin, and creating humorous texts referring to the European tradition of carnival games), and absurdity in folklore. Secondly, we refer to the European tradition: French (from Rabelais to Topor), English (we recall the first translator of English absurdists ‒ Andrzej Nowicki), and Russian (including the Oberiu group, and above all, Daniil Charms in the lead). We also provide space for texts addressing the topic of absurdity in Slavic literature. Finally, the connections with absurdity of such categories as macabre, irony, dark humour, paradox will also be scrutinized.
