The article is devoted to Translation Criticism as one of the fields of Translation Studies. On the basis of the theoretical work of E. Balcerzan, J. S. Holmes and K. Reiss, the article defines the ideas behind and the aims of translation criticism, and then looks at specific methods of analysis. The final part concerns the use of corpus linguistics in translation research and the problem of translation universals
