Human versus inhuman. Jean-François Lyotard’s negation of art
Monika Murawska (University of Warsaw)
What would inhuman art be? Would it involve the negation of art as such? Jean-François Lyotard’s philosophy provides guidelines for the search for answers to these questions. Lyotard’s thought is focused precisely on what he calls „inhuman”, which becomes one of the central terms of his complex and multifaceted philosophy. In his discussion of the inhuman, Lyotard refers to the forces that a human being cannot control, the affective sphere that he also identifi es as the Thing. Lyotard endeavors to inverse the meaning of concepts and shows how the human undergoes a transformation into the inhuman, while the inhuman becomes fully human. Therefore, the subject of the article is the Thing, which is deep-rooted and belongs to what is inhuman in us, as well as the description of the sensuous event sparked when we are confronted with a work of art.
