The Problem of Over-Interpretation in Literary Studies

The article discusses the functions of over-interpretation in contemporary literary studies, beginning with an attempt to defi ne the principal epistemological positions in the debate on the ways of establishing literary meanings. The understanding of the role of interpretation depends on the choice of a given position. Over-interpretation has several homonymic meanings. The article highlights the differences between interpretation in literary studies and colloquial or artistic interpretation. It identifi es fi fteen types of over-interpretation and their implications in literary studies.
