The Limits of Over-Interpretation and the Ways of Knowing
Ewa Szczęsna (University of Warsaw)
The article describes interpretation as a mental construction that has various formsof textual representation. Interpretation may be the main objective of a text, and can also be used as a tool to create a text form. The paper shows the different forms of interpretation and their contextual aspects. It proves that the category of interpretation is variously understood, hence inconclusive. A comparison of the cognitive perspectives presented in the works of Eco and Rorty reveals different ways of understanding of interpretation, over-interpretation, the use of the text, and the relationship between these categories. The problem of the limits of over-interpretation may not be the subject of interest for any of these perspectives. This problem does not exist when interpretation is considered in terms of usefulness, or when interpretation actually concerns over-interpretation, thus drawing attention exclusively to the limits of interpretation.
