„Let me Declare Myself as a Geometrician”: Interpretation, Over-Interpretation and Its Limits

The article addresses the issue of „limits of over-interpretation”, which was famously brought up in Jonathan Culler’s discussion with Richard Rorty, Umberto Eco and Christine Brook-Rose. Over-interpretation is described as „a unique state of line”. This concept is borrowed from Carl Shmitt’s theory of state law and allows one to problematize the central question of Culler’s theory: if the guarantee of over-interpretation is the background, who represents agency, who determines the methodological position of an interpreting person? The work of Pierre Bourdieu and Giorgio Agamben has been referenced, among others.
